What MetaCogni does and doesn't see.
Last updated May 8, 2026
The short version
- The MetaCogni browser extension runs on your machine. The text of your prompts and the responses from Claude or Gemini are processed locally in your browser to power features like intent classification and token estimation.
- Nothing the extension records leaves your device. MetaCogni does not transmit your prompts, responses, usage stats, or any other data to MetaCogni servers or third parties.
- We don't collect your name, email, IP address, or any account identifier from the AI sites you use.
- The only network calls the extension makes are to the AI platform's own APIs — the same ones your browser is already calling when you chat.
What stays on your device
The extension keeps a local store on your machine — in your browser's storage — to power on-device features. This includes:
- The text of recent prompts you've sent, used to improve a personal intent classifier that runs entirely in your browser.
- A log of usage events — when the brain made a prediction, which suggestions you accepted or dismissed, estimated input/output tokens for messages, and similar signals.
- The weights and embeddings of your personal on-device classifier.
All of this stays on your device. None of it is uploaded. The local store has size limits, with older data evicted as newer data comes in. Uninstalling the extension removes everything it stored.
What MetaCogni servers don't receive
- The text of your prompts.
- Responses from Claude or Gemini.
- Your name, email, IP address, location, or any account identifier from the AI sites you use.
- Conversation, thread, or session identifiers.
- Browser fingerprints, user-agent details, or hardware information.
- The specific URLs of pages you visit beyond the supported platform name.
- Token counts, cost estimates, or any other usage statistics the extension surfaces in the popup.
Permissions the extension uses
storage— to keep your local data and settings on your device.activeTab— so the popup can show the right platform-specific stats for the tab you're currently looking at, and so actions you trigger from the popup target the correct tab.- Site access for
claude.aiandgemini.google.com— the only sites the extension activates on.
The extension does not request <all_urls>, webRequest, cookies, tabs, history, bookmarks, or clipboard access. It can't see anything outside the supported AI sites listed above.
Network calls the extension makes
- Platform usage endpoints — used to read your platform-side budget percentage from the same endpoint your dashboard uses, so the overlay can show how much of your subscription you've consumed. These are same-origin requests using the session cookie your browser already has.
- Local extension assets — the on-device classifier (the runtime and the model) is bundled inside the extension and loaded from your local extension files, never fetched at runtime.
No third-party analytics, advertising, or fingerprinting SDKs are loaded. No external scripts at runtime. No requests are made to MetaCogni servers from the extension.
Limited Use compliance
MetaCogni's use of information received from the supported AI platforms adheres to the spirit of the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. We do not transfer the user's data to third parties, do not use the data for advertising or unrelated purposes, and do not allow humans to read the data except as necessary for security investigations or with the user's explicit consent.
Your controls
- Uninstalling the extension. Removing the extension from your browser deletes the local data it stored on your device.
- Other requests. For questions or any other data-related requests, email
